Waifu Crush Wednesday: Chie Satonaka

ALERT!   – The picture of Chie Satonaka used as this article’s featured image, as well as the one used after the jump were both drawn by Ilya Kuvshinov.  You can find his deviantART with links to his other social media accounts HERE.

To be honest, I had always liked the aesthetic look of Chie Satonaka ever since I heard of Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4.  As you all might know from my recent slew of articles, I recently completed Persona 4 the Golden on Playstation Vita and am busy watching Persona 4 the Golden ANIMATION (even wrote a 1st Episode Impression for it!).  With Chie being my “best girl”, figured that it would only be right that I highlight her in this week’s Waifu Crush Wednesday!

 About Waifu Crush Wednesday

Waifu Crush Wednesday is modeled after the popular “#WCW” or “Women Crush Wednesday”.  This bi-weekly editorial focuses upon female characters in gaming, anime, and manga that I happen to like in one form or another.  I will do my best to explain my affinity for the character featured here.

 Chie Satonaka

Chie Satonaka is a second year High School student in the town of Inaba.  She is one of the main characters from the game Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4, being one of the four selectable heroines which you can add to your party to fight with their own “Persona”.  She is quite outspoken and considers herself not very feminine (even though she is, very); Chie is also a fan of meat (steak in particular) and Kung-Fu flicks.  She feels the most down-to-earth out of the entire female casts and seems the most honest with her feelings when it comes down to you two being in an intimate relationship.

I really like Satonaka’s personality because she is not a typical “girly girl”, and while I do not really mind the ones that are, I prefer a girl who is not so standard.  She is heavily cute and feminine within her own way when placed into situations that calls her romantic feelings into question, but that just shows that she can still be girly when the times comes.  Not to mention it was shown in the Persona 4 the Golden ANIMATION that she does indeed wear very womanly things at times.  Her affinity for meat is also really great (especially since I am nowhere close to a vegetarian), and she is a fan of Chinese martial arts movies (everyone knows I love them myself).

Something that really drew me to Chie was early on within the game when she confronted her shadow.  Despite her being best friends with Yukiko, she had some jealously towards her (partially due to her feminine qualities and partially due to her attention from the opposite sex).  This is something I can relate to on a personal note since I am sure something like that was hidden deep down within me because of my own best friend; I can relate to her internal conflict.  At the end however, she really does care for her friend regardless of the jealousy she might feel at times.

When it came down to engaging within romantic relationships, I believe that Chie actually says, “I love you” more times than any other girl.  She seems the most earnest and is the one girl I would actually come back to Inaba for if I was Yu Narukami.  Also, as far as I know, she is the only one who actually tells her entire family that she is going out with you of her own volition (that is something big).  Not to mention she did something like wear a Yukata during New Years despite it being against her feminine charm (though Naoto did win in this category since she actually wants to be a boy and allowed you to see her wearing a school girl’s uniform), but Chie definitely deserves recognition for going outside of her comfort zone.

Of all the girls that I saw within Persona 4, she is my absolute favorite one.  Do not get me wrong, I did write an article not too long ago where I could not make up my mind between Chie, Rise, and Yukiko, but I was firm with my choice by the end of the game (so I will be loyal to Chie come the second playthrough).  She was my most dependent fighter within clutch situations in the game, and she shielded me from harm more times than any other character when I was about to take fatal damage.  “The Spunky Dragon with Deadly Legs” (her title from Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena) is definitely deserving to be my #WCW.
